Botley Road, North Baddesley

Overview

This project focused on improving and extending the rear of an existing property, transforming a historic extension to make it more suitable for our client's needs. The client wanted to enhance their kitchen and dining areas, improve natural light, and make better use of the existing extension footprint. The aim was to include as much glazing as possible.

Design Approach

The original rear extension was narrow and low, with limited functionality, so we needed to carefully consider this when designing the rear extension. The new extension has created a bright and spacious kitchen-diner complete with double doors and large windows opening onto the garden.

Within the existing kitchen, a breakfast island was introduced as part of the reconfiguration, providing both additional workspace and a sociable focal point for everyday use. New skylights were added to bring in more natural light, ensuring the entire rear living space feels open and airy throughout the day. The use of Crittal glazing for the extension complemented the property's traditional aesthetic, whilst forming a large area of glazing to create modern, open feel to the property.

The remaining portion of the old extension was also improved. The bathroom was redesigned by removing the bath but retaining the shower, creating a more efficient layout. The freed-up floor space allowed for the introduction of a dedicated utility room.

Outcome

The finished project delivers a much more practical and enjoyable living environment. With a larger, brighter dining area, an improved kitchen layout, better use of space, and enhanced natural light, the redesigned extension significantly upgrades the home’s usability and long-term appeal. The below photos show the house before the works, a photo during the works with temporary walls, and the finished extension.
