Overview
This project involved the significant transformation of a bungalow through extensive ground-floor reconfiguration and large-scale extensions. The clients sought to increase their footprint, modernise the layout, and create a spacious, contemporary home that better suited their lifestyle. In addition to obtaining planning permission and building control approval, we also needed to liaise with Southern Water for a build-over agreement.
Internal Updates
A substantial side and rear extension formed the heart of the redesign, adding generous space for a new open-plan lounge–diner complete with a kitchen and breakfast area. This new living zone is strongly connected to the garden through expansive bi-fold doors, creating a bright, flexible and sociable space ideal for both everyday living and entertaining.
As part of the redesign, the existing conservatory and lean-to were removed to make way for the new extension, ensuring a cleaner, more cohesive layout. The former ground-floor bedroom was converted into an en-suite for the master bedroom, while the additional footprint gained from the extension allowed for a rearrangement of internal rooms. This enabled the creation of two sizeable new bedrooms, each with its own en-suite, dramatically improving both comfort and functionality.
The front porch was also extended, including an angled addition at 45 degrees to optimise space in a tight internal corner, creating a more welcoming and practical entrance.
External Improvements
The external improvements extended beyond the main house. A new standalone garden room was introduced, offering additional flexible space suitable for work, relaxation or hobbies. The existing garage was removed to streamline the layout and free up external space.
Further visual updates were incorporated to modernise the property’s appearance, supported by a new driveway and a coordinated wall and planting area to enhance kerb appeal and overall presentation.
Outcome
The completed scheme represents a comprehensive transformation, turning a modest single-storey property into a spacious, modern home with multiple high-quality living areas and en-suite bedrooms.
